WINGS OF THE CITY EXHIBITION ARRIVES IN APRIL

The Arts in Public Places Commission approved plans for Greenville to join a select group of cities from around the globe that have hosted Wings of the City, a collection of nine monumental bronze sculptures by world-renowned Mexican artist Jorge Marín. The sculptures will be installed in Falls Park and on the Peace Center campus in April and remain in Greenville until October.
Marín is one of the most recognized figurative artists in Mexico. He has participated in more than 300 collective exhibitions, and individually, his work has been exhibited in museums in Europe, Asia and North and South America. Alas de México, the iconic sculpture from the Wings of the City collection, is on permanent display in 13 cities on three continents.
In 2013, the temporary Wings of the City installation began its journey through the United States, with stops in Texas, Colorado and California. Greenville will be the first city on the East Coast to host the exhibition. Described as “an aesthetic experience where the perfection of the human body is mixed, in balance, with allegorical forms and fantastic beings,” Marín’s sculptures are expected to draw visitors from across the region.
The City of Greenville and the Hispanic Alliance of SC collaborated to bring Wings of the City to Greenville and will work closely with the Jorge Marín Foundation to facilitate the installation. Bank of America will be the presenting sponsor of Wings of the City, which will include a special interactive web tool, with photos and information about the collection, and a map showing sculpture locations for the exhibition. Piedmont Natural Gas and BMW will also participate as sponsors of the exhibit.
According to Adela Mendoza, executive director of the Hispanic Alliance SC, the collection promotes a community-wide dialogue and offers a bridge to Mexican culture. “Wings of the City” highlights the importance of migration and the cultural exchange that enriches societies,” said Mendoza. “This world-class exhibit celebrates the global spirit of the Upstate—symbolizing human connection across distance, and the role of art as a universal language.”
The opportunity to bring this exhibit to the East Coast was presented by the General Consulate of Mexico in Raleigh, NC. “We are thrilled to welcome this magnificent collection to South Carolina and invite the public to enjoy the work of one of Mexico’s most prominent cultural ambassadors” said general consul, Claudia Velasco Osorio.
The project team proposed Falls Park and the Peace Center as locations for the Wings of the City exhibit due to the interactive nature of the collection. "Wings of the City is more than just putting sculpture in our public spaces,” said City Council member Russell Stall. “Through the collaboration with the Hispanic Alliance, we are featuring world renowned art that demonstrates Greenville’s commitment as welcoming city and broadens our understanding of Hispanic cultural heritage.”
The Wings of the City exhibit aligns with Bank of America’s commitment to support nonprofit institutions that highlight varied cultural traditions and help the arts sector create pathways for more diverse engagement. “At Bank of America, we believe in the power of the arts to help economies thrive, educate and enrich societies and create greater cultural understanding,” said Stacy Brandon, Bank of America Market President for the Upstate. “We are especially proud to help bring such a powerful exhibit by a world-renowned artist to Greenville to promote discussion and awareness of Mexican culture for the benefit of our community.”
The Jorge Marín Foundation was established in 2017 to preserve and protect the artist’s work and to further Marín’s belief in the power of art to create more reflective and peaceful societies. "Through Wings of the City, Jorge Marín has enriched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people all over the world by reminding them what it means to be human,” said Elena Catalán, director of the Jorge Marín Foundation. “And no matter where they arrive, his sculptures, which he considers incomplete by themselves, acquire new meaning with each person who interacts with them.”

LA EXHIBICIÓN ALAS DE LA CIUDAD LLEGARÁ EN ABRIL

La Comisión de Arte en Lugares Públicos, aprobó los planes para que Greenville se una a un grupo selecto de ciudades de todo el mundo que han exhibido Alas de la Ciudad, una colección de nueve esculturas monumentales en bronce del mundialmente reconocido artista mexicano Jorge Marín. Las esculturas se instalarán en Falls Park y en el campus del Peace Center en abril y permanecerán en Greenville hasta octubre.
Marín es uno de los artistas figurativos más destacados de México. Ha participado en más de 300 exposiciones colectivas, e individualmente, su obra ha sido expuesta en museos de Europa, Asia, y a lo largo del continente americano. Alas de México, la icónica escultura de la colección Alas de la Ciudad, está en exhibición permanente en 13 ciudades de tres continentes.
En 2013, la instalación temporal de Alas de la Ciudad inició su camino por Estados Unidos, llegando a Texas, Colorado y California. Greenville será la primera ciudad de la costa este en los Estados Unidos que recibirá la exposición. Descritas como "una experiencia estética donde la perfección del cuerpo humano se mezcla en equilibrio con formas alegóricas y seres fantásticos", se espera que las esculturas de Marín atraigan visitantes de toda la región.
La Ciudad de Greenville y la Alianza Hispana de Carolina del Sur y el Consulado de México en Raleigh-Carolina del Norte, colaboraron para traer Alas de la Ciudad a Greenville y están trabajando en estrecha colaboración con la Fundación Jorge Marín para facilitar la instalación. Bank of America es el patrocinador oficial de Alas de la Ciudad y de una herramienta digital interactiva que incluye fotos e información sobre la colección y un mapa que muestra la ubicación de cada escultura. Piedmont Natural Gas y BMW también participarán como patrocinadores de la exhibición.
“Esta exhibición promueve un diálogo en todo ámbito de nuestra comunidad y ofrece un puente hacia la cultura mexicana. Alas de la Ciudad destaca la importancia de la migración y el intercambio cultural que enriquece a toda sociedad”, dijo Adela Mendoza, Directora Ejecutiva de Alianza Hispana. “Esta exhibición de clase mundial celebra el espíritu global que caracteriza al norte de nuestro estado, y simboliza la conexión humana a través de la distancia y el papel del arte como lenguaje universal” finalizó Mendoza.
La oportunidad de llevar esta exhibición a la costa este fue presentada por el Consulado General de México en Raleigh, NC. “Estamos encantados de dar la bienvenida a esta magnífica colección a Carolina del Sur e invitar al público a disfrutar del trabajo de uno de los embajadores culturales más destacados de México”, dijo la cónsul general, Claudia Velasco Osorio.
El equipo del proyecto propuso Falls Park y el Peace Center como ubicaciones para la exhibición Alas de la Ciudad debido a la naturaleza interactiva de la colección. "Alas de la Ciudad va más allá de colocar esculturas en nuestros espacios públicos", dijo el miembro del Consejo Municipal Russell Stall. "A través de la colaboración con la Alianza Hispana, estamos presentando arte de renombre mundial que demuestra el compromiso de Greenville de ser una ciudad acogedora, y que amplía nuestro entendimiento de la herencia cultural hispana ".
La exhibición Alas de la Ciudad se alinea con el compromiso de Bank of America de impulsar a las instituciones sin fines de lucro que promueven tradiciones culturales diversas y ayudan al sector de las artes a abrir avenidas de participación más diversas. “En Bank of America, creemos en el poder de las artes para fomentar la prosperidad económica, la educación, y el enriquecimiento social, y para generar una mayor comprensión cultural”, dijo Stacy Brandon, presidenta de mercado de Bank of America en el norte del estado. "Estamos especialmente orgullosos de ayudar a traer una exhibición tan poderosa de un artista de renombre mundial a Greenville para promover el diálogo y entendimiento de la cultura mexicana en beneficio de nuestra comunidad".
La Fundación Jorge Marín se estableció en 2017, para preservar y proteger el trabajo del artista. así como promover la convicción de Marín en el poder del arte para crear sociedades más reflexivas y pacíficas. “A través de Wings of the City, Jorge Marín ha enriquecido la vida de cientos de miles de personas en todo el mundo recordándoles lo que significa ser humano”, dijo Elena Catalán, directora de la Fundación Jorge Marín. “Y no importa a dónde llegan sus esculturas, que él considera incompletas por sí mismas, adquieren un nuevo significado con cada persona que interactúa con ellas ” culminó Catalán.
